I have attended six tea parties over the past year and a few counter-rallies and townhalls. I usually do not carry signs with me because I am either broadcasting the internet radio show live or video taping. I did carry a sign to my first tea party in Orlando, Florida back in March 2009 that read, “Washington Can Keep The Change, I’ll Keep My Freedom.” I generally do not participate in indentity politics. I am an angry American period. But the recent allegations from the left that tea partiers are a bunch of racist homophobes inspired me and gave me the courage to carry a sign with me at the most recent Orlando Tea Party last evening. Here it is:
According to the mainstream media, I should have been run off the property of Orlando City Hall. I should have been treated with disdain. The picture obviously reveals that I was surrounded by violent extremists wanting to bite off my fingers and pummel me on the ground. Oh wait, that is the activity of those on the left. How was I treated by these right-wing extremists? I posed for at least 50 pictures that I know of and I am sure many were taken from afar. People from all walks of life came up and shook my hand and thanked me…yes, thanked me! Several were *gasp* miniorities themselves. One man adopted me and spent the entire evening standing with me. I met many great people, as I do at every tea party I have ever been too.
The local media reported that hundreds showed up, more like 3,000 to 4,000, to hear House Minority Leader John Boehner, Congressman Steve King and Mike Gallagher along with various local speakers including the Mt. Dora doctor that became famous for posting the following note on his door:
So did the media pay any attention to me? Of course not. I paraded past the news vans to no avail. One cameraman was across the street from me and had the camera on me, but I’m not sure if I made the nightly news. I know the reporter with him glanced at my sign and continued on her way. I do not match the narrative coming from the media. Neither do the blacks and hispanics that joined me at this tea party. But we know the truth and my little “experiment” had the result I expected. Good thing the SEIU thugs were not nearby or they might have knocked some sense into me.

Oh, Diane! I LOVE this! It is like the lady I saw at the 9/12 March. She was standing on the street holding a “God Bless” sign, and saying “thank you” to everyone who passed by. Did I mention that she was black? I almost started crying. I went over to her and gave her a hug – it was an awesome feeling… to be validated I guess… which probably means I am more affected by what those libtards say than I would prefer. Anyway… I have a feeling that YOUR sign had the same effect… of COURSE we’re not bigoted, racist, homophobic, misogynistic a-holes. But it feels really good when we’re proven.
I’m not sure if this will make any sense, but *I* know what I mean.
Love ya, Lady!

Diane, this is great! I’m proud of you, and of all those ‘extremist fringe bigoted’ Tea Partiers. This message is definitely NOT getting out per MSM. THANK YOU for doing this, you most likely helped our cause of liberty more than you will ever know.
Linking to this today. Have a wonderful weekend!
Pup
Thank you so much! I usually like to be a wallflower and not attract attention to myself, but I really felt compelled to do this because I was sick of the media lies. I appreciate the linky love, Pup!
This is great Diane! Sorry it took so long to comment, have been very busy. Looks like lots of people have been as well, or have had creative slumps since many blogs I go to have not updated in a week or more. I was the same way, and just updated mine yesterday. Anyway, this sign is great! Of course if those people over at MSNBC saw it, they would just say that you were a plant by the Republican Party to try and show that the Tea Party are not racists. It is sad that we know what they would say even before they say it…very, very predictable to say the least.
The problem is, and it is not with you but with society as a whole is that we label people way too much in circumstances such as these. I know you were trying to make a point and you made it for sure, but those out there on the left are making people like you go out there and label yourself such as this. They tell us that the tea parties are a bunch of racists bigots who hate gays because the party is led by homophobes. That leads people to believe whatever comes out of the MSM mouth because their words, in some people’s minds, cannot be questioned.
Those who say they are the most tolerant are usually the ones who have the most hate, and that is why we hear them say they are tolerant. DO you really need to repeat it if you ARE tolerant of other lifestyles? Not at all. If I am not a crook, I do not need to keep repeating it because it would make no sense to do so.
I am all over the map on this one but I think you understand my point. It is a shame that you have to prove these people wrong about the tea parties and the stigma they get from the MSM, but since you have to I am glad you are doing such a great job and jabbing back at the left!
I generally do not participate in identity politics.
