Restoring Honor Rally

Today was Glenn Beck’s big day – his Restoring Honor Rally in Washington, D.C. on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.  The permit that Beck obtained covered 300,000 people and most estimates have the crowd numbering at least that many and as much as 500,000.  Many people stayed overnight on the Mall to hold their spot and they were rewarded with an event that paid tribute to God, country and our military personnel.  The hymn Amazing Grace could be heard throughout the Mall area as the event opened.  Beck spoke for nearly an hour.  His address began with him tearing up over the humbling numbers of the crowd.

Beck said,  ”Something beyond imagination is happening.  America today begins to turn back to God.  For too long, this country has wandered in darkness.”  He said it was now time to “concentrate on the good things in America, the things we have accomplished and the things we can do tomorrow.”  There were no overt political statements made.

Sarah Palin was the other marquee speaker and she presented herself as the mother of a soldier and spoke extensively about the military and referred to the people in attendance at the rally as “patriots.”  She said,  ”It is so humbling to get to be here with you today, patriots. You who are motivated and engaged … and knowing never to retreat.  We must restore America and restore her honor.  No, something more, something much more. I’ve been asked to speak as the mother of a soldier and I am proud of that distinction. Say what you want to say about me, but I raised a combat vet and you can’t take that away from me.”

Despite efforts by the race card baiters like Al Sharpton to peg the rally as diminishing the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. King’s niece spoke at the rally.  Sharpton claimed that he and his activists were reclaiming the dream.  I ask, “What dream?”  Dr. King’s dream was not for blacks to continue to live under the oppression of entitlement programs and blaming others for keeping them down, rather than raising themselves up.  The dream of Dr. King was not for a man to be judged by the color of his skin.

Beck claimed that for America to be restored, we need to restore ourselves.  I agree with him completely!
