Should 14th Amendment Be Repealed?

The Republicans are floating an idea about repealing the 14th Amendment to prevent the children born here to criminal invaders from becoming U.S. citizens.  The 14th Amendment has been twisted from its original intent and has been rewarding these children with citizenship and then when they reach the age of 21, they turn around and get their family members citizenship.  While I agree with further defining of the Citizenship Clause, I am completely against repeal because then we lose the Due Process Clause and Equal Protection Clause.

The Citizenship Clause came about because of the Dred Scott v. Sanford case, which ruled that blacks were not U.S. citizens.  It was a much needed clause, but the broad way that it has been interpreted hurts our country as illegals run across the border specifically to give birth in America.  It reads, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”  The protection was meant for freed slaves, not criminal invaders.  Slaves broke no laws coming to America, nor did their children.  Why would criminals that are invading our country be given such a right?  Particularly when no other countries have such a practice.  Criminal invaders are under the jurisdiction of their home country, not America.

Investor’s Business Daily reports, “In Texas this year, some 60,000 so-called ‘anchor babies’ will be born to the 1.5 million illegal aliens estimated to reside there. They’re called that because under the current interpretation of the 14th Amendment they’re automatic citizens, encouraging more illegals to arrive and making it hard to deport those already here.”

This is a complicated matter especially when considering anchor babies already given citizenship.  Would they be grandfathered in and does that come with amnesty if the leftists are successful?  But as far as I’m concerned, the parents should be deported and so they would have to take their children with them.  So whether they are considered citizens or not should have no bearing on their parents.
