The Mouse of the Senate (Harry Reid) claimed that the latest incarnation of Speaker Boehner’s deal to raise the debt ceiling was written for the Tea Party. I laughed when I heard that considering the fact that most Tea Partiers are against raising the debt ceiling at all. But when I saw the CBO’s mark-up of Boehner’s new deal, I stopped laughing. Look at this:
I had heard rumors that Boehner’s bill cut less than $100 billion in the first year, but the CBO is claiming that there is less than $1 billion in cuts. Less than $1 billion! And the total over the ten years, which is laughable on its face since future Congresses cannot be locked into spending caps, is less than $1 trillion. I thought cuts would match the rise in the debt ceiling. And everyone knows that we will have to raise the debt ceiling again after 2012 with these pathetic numbers. This is like the budget deal Boehner worked up with the President that cut only $350 million from the budget. Who are they kidding? This is an epic fail!
And why has Boehner offered another deal anyway? The House has their deal and it is Cut the Crap and Balance, which was a pretty pathetic plan as well. To be fair, Boehner’s office is now claiming that they will rewrite the bill to get cuts to match the rise in the debt ceiling, but this is still a joke. A rise in the debt ceiling will not carry us for ten years, but the cuts are stretched out over 10 years. This makes no common sense and will do nothing to keep America from being downgraded.
Even more disconcerting are the people jumping on board to support Boehner: Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan and even Allen West. These are suppose to be tea party champions. And they are proving to be as lily-livered as the establishment. Their excuse is that they only control one third of the power, the Democrats have the Senate and Presidency. May I remind them that they only have that much because the Tea Party helped sweep them in and now we find ourselves once again abandoned by the people who promised to do our will.
