Ames Iowa Straw Poll

The first serious indicator of who has the stuff to carry a campaign all the way to November 2012 is today in Ames, Iowa.  The Iowa Straw Poll has only chosen the correct winner in one of the last five polls, but this little exercise is anything but futile.  The Straw Poll generally culls the field of the weak candidates.  I expect Tim Pawlenty, Jon Huntsman, Rick Santorum and Herman Cain will come up short when the results roll in within the next hour.  I would not be surprised with a Ron Paul win.  The Paultards have been working overtime to post signs that are hanging everywhere in the main hall clearly visible behind the Fox News pundits.  I’ve been arguing with them on the radio show and Twitter reminding them that the numbers that matter are those in the primaries.  And Ron Paul does not win primaries.  He can bus in the votes, but what does a facade really do for a campaign?

There are two big names missing from the Straw Poll, which could prove a problem for the Straw Poll to be considered relevent.  Without Gov. Rick Perry, who announced his presidential run this afternoon, and Gov. Sarah Palin, it is hard to trust the Straw Poll results.  Rick Perry has a group in Iowa pushing for a write in campaign.  Perry plans to be in Iowa tomorrow and Palin is currently in Iowa and making a huge splash.  She mentioned to Sean Hannity last night that she is still strongly considering a run and running through her obvious considerations with family being the key factor.
